Accessing the Student Support Site – Via VPN or Azure Virtual Desktop

This Guide explains how to access the Student Support site via either Global Protect VPN or through Azure Virtual Desktop. Users of Hull Imaged PC’S\Laptops are advised to use the Azure Virtual Desktop option.

Please note the University of York have changed their VPN software from Pulse Secure to Global Protect. If you previously used Pulse Secure to access Student Support you will now need to use Global Protect

This guide explains how to download, install and set up a VPN connection using the Global Protect VPN software that is now required to access to the HYMS Student Support Site.

York Laptop\PC Users

First check you may already have the software installed, if not navigate to the Software Center and install the Global Protect software.

Hull Laptop\PC Users

If you are using a University of Hull managed device, please connect to Student Support via Azure Virtual Desktop.

Personal Laptop\PC\Mac

If you are using a personal device, please connect to Student Support via Azure Virtual Desktop.

To connect to the VPN you can either:

Find the GlobalProtect  icon in the system tray beside your clock   Global Protect system tray icon
If you don’t see it straight away clock the arrow to show hidden icons

Alternatively

Press the windows key and type Global and then click on the GlobalProtect icon.

When the app is open click on the “Connect ” button and then in the next window enter your university username (abd123) and password and click “Log in”.

Next you will be asked to provide your Duo two factor authentication.

Once you pass the Duo process your VPN will be connected and the icon will be changed to a blue globe with a tick Icon Connected Screenshot 2022-02-23 095053.png

Disconnecting

It is best practice to disconnect from the VPN at the end of the day or finished the  task that required it.

The GlobalProtect box will appear and you can click “Disconnect”

Azure Virtual Desktop

Accessing the Student Support Site via Azure Virtual Desktop

Please note – You will require a York IT account and be registered for Duo two-factor authentication, follow the link below for details on registering for Duo.

Duo two-factor authentication – IT Services, University of York

Open your Browser and navigate to https://vds.york.ac.uk/

When ask to sign in enter your University of York  account (in the format firstname.surname@york.ac.uk) and then click next

You will now be prompted to enter your password and you will you will be asked to provide your Duo two factor authentication

When using Azure Virtual Desktop you have the option of either using the Web Client (which uses your web browser), or installing client software. Our recommendation is to use the Web Client, as this is the quicker option.

Once signed in Select the “HYMS Student Support” desktop icon

The Student Support site will open in a separate window and will prompt you to login with your HYMS account credentials.
