Accessing the Student Support Site – Via Pulse Secure or the York VDS (Virtual Desktop Service)

This Guide explains how to access the Student Support site via either Pulse Secure or the York VDS. Users of Hull Imaged PC’S\Laptops are advised to use the York VDS option. (Note: the York VDS option is currently undergoing testing)

Pulse Secure

This guide explains how to download, install and set up a VPN connection using the Pulse Secure software that is now required to access to the HYMS Student Support Site.

Installing Pulse Secure Software

York Laptop\PC Users

First check you may already have the software installed, if not navigate to the Software Center and install the Pulse Secure software.

Hull Laptop\PC Users

Contact help@hyms.ac.uk for the software to be installed.

Personal Laptop\PC\Mac

If you are using a personal device, please connect to Student Support via the VDS.

Setting up Student Support VPN on Pulse Secure software

Click Start – Type “Pulse Secure” – Open the Pulse Secure App

Click the +Sign to add a new Connection

In the Name box enter ‘HYMS Student Support’

In the Server URL box enter “portal.hyms.ac.uk/studentsupport”

Set up Pulse Secure VPN Connection

Click Add

Connecting to Student Support VPN

Click Start – Type “Pulse Secure” – Open the Pulse Secure App

Click Connect on the HYMS Student Support tab

Open Pulse Secure VPN Connection

Enter your HYMS Details (username in the format: hyabc)

Enter User Details to Connect to Pulse Secure

Click Connect

Once the connection is complete, open your browser and go to the usual address that you would use to access the HYMS Student Support website

Enter your HYMS details (username in the format: hyms\hyabc)

Disconnecting from Student Support VPN

Click Start – Type “Pulse Secure” – Open the Pulse Secure App – Click Disconnect next to the HYMS Student Support Tab.

Disconnecting from Pulse Secure Connection

Users of Hull University Laptops may need to disconnect from Global Protect (The Hull University VPN Software) prior to connecting to Pulse Secure. To do so follow the procedure below.

Hull Users Disconnecting from Global Protect

Click Start – Type “Global Protect” – Open Global Protect

Open Global Protect VPN Application

Click on the three bars in the Global Protect App and select Disable

Disabling Global Protect VPN Connection

Enter a reason – Click OK

York VDS

Accessing the Student Support Site via the York VDS

Please note – You will require a York IT account and be registered for Duo two-factor authentication, follow the link below for details on registering for Duo.

Duo two-factor authentication – IT Services, University of York

Open your Browser and navigate to https://workspace.york.ac.uk/

Enter your York Username and Password – Click Login

You will now be prompted be enter a OTP code – Open the Duo App on your Mobile phone – Select Refresh codeEnter code in OTP box below – Click OK

 

You’ll now be prompted to install the Parallels Client Click Cancel – And when the window below appears Select “Open in Parallels HTML5 Client” (this is the quicker option).

Once signed in Select the “HYMS Student Support” desktop icon

The Student Support site will open in a separate windows.

As we have a 5-user concurrent license, please log out when not in use.
