Blackboard: Creating and deploying tests

This article will explain how to create and deploy tests (quizzes) within Blackboard. Tests can be useful to check student comprehension, reinforce student learning or as a revision aid.

Creating a Test

To create a test, follow these simple steps:

  1. Navigate to the course where you want to create the Test.
  2. From the Course Management menu, select Course Tools then Test, Surveys and Pools.
  3. Now click on Tests. This will take you to a page listing all the Tests within that course.

  1. To create a new test, click the Build Test button – this will take you to the Test Information page.
  2. Give your test a Name and a Description.

  1. Now enter Instructions for the students taking the test.

  1. Click Submit to complete the process. This will open the Test Canvas page were you can add questions to your Test.

Adding questions to the test canvas

Blackboard provides a number of different question types from Multiple Choice to Fill in the Blank. For an explanation of each of the different question types please visit the Blackboard help site.

To add a question to a test, follow these simple steps:

  1. Click the Create Question button and from the drop-down select the question type you would like to create. You will be taken to the question authoring page. In this example, we will create a Multiple Choice question.

 

You do not have to give the question a title. It is not displayed to the student when they’re taking the Test.

  1. Write your question in the Question Text box.

  1. Now configure the options for this question type. For a multiple choice question you get the following options:
    • Answer Numbering – add numbers or letters to the answers
    • Answer Orientation – display the answers vertically or horizontal
    • Allow Partial Credit – When you enable partial credit, a portion of the total points for a question is awarded when an answer isn’t entirely correct. You can assign specific percentages for partial credit to multiple choice questions.
    • Show Answers in a Random Order – display the answers in a different order every time the question is displayed.

Please be aware these options will differ depending on the question type you have decided to create.

  1. Now enter your Answers. By default (for a multiple choice question) you’re given four answer boxes. You can change this if you wish, from the drop-down menu.
  2. Make sure you select which answer is correct. You do this by selecting the button next to the answer.

  1. Enter feedback that will display in response to a correct answer and an incorrect answer.  If partial credit is allowed, answers that are partially correct will receive the feedback for an incorrect answer.
  2. Click Submit to create the question. Repeat this process to create your next question.

Deploying a Test

Once you have created the test the next step is to deploy it.

  1. Navigate to the content area where you would like the test to be located. Make sure Edit Mode is switched on.
  2. From the Assessments menu, select Test.
  3. From here you can create a new Test or deploy (add) an existing test. Under the Add an Existing Test header, select the Test you have just created followed by Submit.
  4. This will open the Test Options page. Test options control the instructions, availability, due dates, feedback, self-assessment and presentation of the test.
  5. Add further Test Information where required – you can add a description and choose to Open the test in new window. You can also show the Test instructions and description to students if you wish.

  1. You can also configure options related to the Test Availability.
    • Make the link available – students will only be able to see the Test when the link has been made available.
    • Add a new announcement for this test – this will automatically generate a generic announcement informing students about the test.
    • Multiple Attempts – here you can set a limit for the number of attempts a student can take.
    • Score attempts using – you will normally leave this as Last Graded Attempt but you might decide to choose Highest Grade or Average.
    • Force Completion – if you select this option, once a student has started a test they must complete it.
    • Set Timer – specify how long students have to complete the test.
    • Display After – make the test available at a set date and time.
    • Display Until – make the test available until a set date and time.
    • Password – create a password to restrict access to the test.

  1. The Test Availability Exceptions allow you to deploy the test to different users with specific settings. This is useful if you wish to deployed the quiz to different groups of students.
  2. If you wish Set a date by which the Test must be complete. Here you can also restrict the student from taken the test if the due date has passed.

  1. You can also choose to display the students attempt in the Grade Centre. You have the option to hide this score from the instructor. It’s unlikely you will do this.
  2. Show test results and feedback to students allows you to specify how and when the results and feedback are displayed to the students. For example, when the have completed the quiz or after a specified date.

  1. Finally, you can configure how the Test is presented. All at once or One question at a time. You can also Randomise Questions and Prohibit Backtracking.
  2. Click Submit to save your settings.

Previewing a Test

You can preview the Test by clicking on the link within the course. It’s a good idea to preview your Test to ensure questions and settings have been configured correctly.
